The challenges facing youth

time-management

The modern-day challenges facing teens, young adults and students is at an all-time high. Coping with the pressure to perform and achieve academically in the classroom and lecture hall can be anxious and stressful.

Worrying about social pressures and being able to relate well to friends and peers can lead to feelings of depression and unworthiness. On top of this, factors such as divorce, financial problems, societal inequalities and challenging home environments add additional pressures to the already difficult situation and rising negative emotions.

Current solutions are not enough

cancellation

Non-judgemental and open communication is a vital ingredient for the prevention of anxiety and depression. Even with this, however, it is often difficult for teens and young adults to express how much distress they feel.

Traditional mental health interventions often focus on talking or thinking and understanding emotions as a way to reduce and minimise their effect.

One-on-one sessions

The Shape of Emotion ease one-on-one sessions are a series of three sessions spaced a week apart where we will gently support the teenager or young adult to release and let go of the difficult emotions troubling them in order to gain the long-sought after relief.

Group sessions

Group sessions are run like Emotional Fitness Classes. Each person in the class attends to whatever negative emotion is troubling them in the privacy of their own mind-body space. Afterwards feedback is optionally shared and questions answered. Group sessions are a great way to experience the relief offered by Shape of Emotion. Regular attendance builds emotional resilience which leads to more focus, calmness and a reduction in the impact that negative emotions can have.

Sessions can be attended onsite at 5th Place's premises in Linden, Johannesburg or online using the zoom video conferencing app.

Taster talks

Parents are usually more concerned with sending their children to extra maths or science lessons than attending to their psycho-social needs. However no amount of extra work will help if the child is consumed by anxiety, thinks they cannot do the subject or lacks confidence in their academic performance.

Taster-talks explore the science behind the impact of emotions on behaviour, performance, physical health and mental well-being and give a taster of the Shape of Emotion process. The talks can be presented at schools or other institutions on request.

One day workshop at the place of learning

Shape of Emotion is a learn-able skill and can be easily taught so that young people can attend to their negative emotions whenever they strike or become overwhelming.

The one day workshop is ideal for schools, colleges, universities and other organisations who want to equip and gift their learners with a life-skill to manage and deal with every kind of negative emotion they will encounter.

The workshop is held at the school or tertiary institution and the Shape of Emotion tool is taught alongside supporting research and information on why learning how to manage emotions is important. Standard pre-anxiety and post-anxiety tests are also conducted to provide baseline data and highlight anyone at risk as well as provide insight into the impact of the Shape of Emotion tool.

In support of resourcefulness

At 5th Place, we started out with a desire to create something that would support children and young people to arrive at a place of resourcefulness to learn, live and thrive. Our experience was that difficult feelings clouded and impeded the ability of children and young people to show up and engage in a way that enabled them to excel and perform at their best.

To address the impact that difficult feelings like stress and anxiety have on individuals, we’ve created a model, process and tool of how we structure, store, represent and regulate our inner feeling states. This tool and process is called Shape of Emotion. It is content-free, gentle, safe, easy to learn and use and quickly clears the effects of difficult feelings allowing for a return to a centred, resourceful state.
